CFS Assists Farmers in Legal Action Against Monsanto's Genetically Engineered Wheat

March 11, 2003

Today US wheat farmers filed a legal petition calling on the Secretary of Agriculture to take immediate action to prevent economic, environmental or social damage resulting from the deregulation of Monsanto’s genetically engineered wheat. This action takes place after hard fought legislative attempts in Montana and North Dakota for a moratorium on Monsanto’s genetically engineered wheat.

Farmers are concerned that if Monsanto’s genetically engineered wheat is commercialized countries abroad will refuse to import any US wheat because of concern of biocontamination.  Many key U.S. export markets have signaled their refusal to accept Monsanto’s genetically engineered wheat, including the European Union, South Korea, Egypt, the Philippines, and others.

A press teleconference will be held
Tuesday, March 11 at 11:00 a.m.
