PFAS "forever chemicals" are in everything from the food we eat to the fabrics we wear, causing serious human health risks like increased cancer risk and infertility, and contaminating drinking water, food, and soil across the country. Luckily, the most comprehensive legislation ever written to address PFAS contamination is being debated in Congress right now.
The PFAS Action Act (H.R 6805) would establish a national drinking water standard for PFAS chemicals, designate PFOA and PFOS (the two most common PFAS chemicals) as hazardous substances, ensure the biggest polluters are held accountable for cleaning up their PFAS contamination, and more. It would also:
• Require the EPA to place limits on the industrial discharge of PFAS;
• Provide $200 million annually for wastewater treatment;
• Require PFAS health testing.
Although the EPA recently set limits on several PFAS chemicals in drinking water, these regulations do not address all forms of PFAS, thereby excluding thousands of these toxic chemicals from testing and potential regulation.
Can you urge your members of Congress to pass the PFAS Action Act to protect us from toxic chemicals today? We've already written a comment for you!
