America's avian flu crisis is a direct consequence of industrial animal agriculture. The crowded, unsanitary conditions of large-scale factory farms create the perfect breeding ground for highly pathogenic viruses, increasing the risk of outbreaks that threaten both animal and human health. New polling from CFS shows that the public is increasingly concerned, with 69% of Americans worried about avian flu and 47% planning to buy fewer eggs due to health and safety concerns.
Despite these risks, the USDA is not currently testing eggs for avian flu, even as 65% of Americans believe they should be. Instead of addressing the root causes of the crisis, the government and industry continue to prioritize production over public health. CFS calls for stronger regulations, increased transparency, and a shift away from industrialized poultry production toward more sustainable, humane farming practices that prioritize food safety and public health.
