Center for Food Safety's Statement on Governor Newsom's Proposed Budget

January 10th, 2020
Center for Food Safety

Center for Food Safety's West Coast Director Rebecca Spector issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom's 2020-2021 budget proposal which was released today:

"CFS applauds Governor Newsom for his commitment to healthy soils, sustainable food production and pest management, agricultural solutions to climate change, and Farm to School programs in his 2020-2021 budget proposal."

"Governor Newsom's budget rightfully points out that "expanding opportunities for local food procurement that is tied to nutrition education is essential for establishing healthy eating habits that children can carry into adulthood." CFS will advocate for a portion of the funds allocated for farm-to-school programs to be used to incentivize school districts to source organic fruits and vegetables which are grown without toxic pesticides that are harmful to children and the natural world."

"CFS also applauds the Governor's commitment to healthy soils and promoting sustainable pest management. We are pleased with the continued funding of the Healthy Soils Program, as building healthy soils is key to battling the climate change crisis. Additionally, helping farmers identify and implement sustainable and non-toxic alternatives to pesticides is critical to protecting human health and reducing climate change. CFS also supports funding for farms and ranches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from dairy waste while at the same time reducing air and water pollution, in particular in disadvantaged communities where many large dairies are located."
