Governor Newsom Signs Executive Order to Protect Biodiversity, Coastal Waters, and Working Lands

Today California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order for California to protect "30 by 30," conserving 30 percent of the state's land and coastal waters by 2030. According to Governor Newsom, the actions are aimed at making California more resilient to the impacts of climate change and wildfires through land conservation and healthy soils initiatives, protecting biodiversity, and "jumpstarting our economy by greening it."

In response, Rebecca Spector, West Coast Director at Center for Food Safety, released the following statement:

"We are incredibly impressed with the Governor's executive order which highlights the importance of establishing policies to promote healthy soils with the goal of reducing the impacts of climate change, while also protecting biodiversity and jumpstarting the economy through innovative farming techniques."

"In particular, we are enthusiastic about the commitment to protect biodiversity, including pollinators, especially in light of our current pending legal petition to protect bumblebees under the California Endangered Species Act."

"The executive order will encourage agency collaboration to ensure that farmers, conservationists, and other stakeholders work together to solve the climate crisis while maintaining a strong economy for all Californians."
