Nightmare Farm Bill Derailed - CFS Statement

May 18, 2018
Center for Food Safety

Today, the Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass their 2018 Farm Bill, which included provisions to boost Big Ag and pesticide companies and overturn environmental and public health protections. The nightmare bill threatened regulations that protect endangered species from harmful chemicals, eliminated limits on subsidies for mega-farms, dismantled local and state authority over pesticide regulation, and weakened the integrity of the organic label.

"We are pleased that every Democrat in Congress recognized the damage this bill posed to the environment, family farmers, and critical nutrition programs and voted against it," said Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of Center for Food Safety.

Center for Food Safety urged its nearly one million members over the past few weeks to demand their Representatives vote against the bill. House Speaker Paul Ryan has called for a revote.

"Members of Congress must vote down any attempts to push this Farm Bill or anything similar," said Kimbrell. "They must continue to work toward a Farm Bill that protects family farmers, healthy foods, and regenerative agriculture." â??
