CFS empowers people, supports farmers, and protects the earth from the adverse impacts of industrial food and farming production, and promotes organic and sustainable food systems. CFS uses legal actions, policy initiatives, scientific and policy reports, and corporate and grassroots campaigns to reduce the impacts of industrial agriculture on the environment and human health. CFS has an integrated suite of issue areas, including: GMOs, organic foods, climate change, factory farming, pesticides, pollinators, food labeling, food safety, nanotechnology, and more.

About the position
CFS is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Media Coordinator to work on cutting-edge food issues such as genetically engineered foods (GMOs), climate change and food, pollinators and pesticides, organic agriculture, food safety and CAFOs/factory farms in the Washington, D.C. or San Francisco office. 

The Media Coordinator will assist with organizing and implementing media outreach with the goal of increasing CFS’s public visibility. The Media Coordinator should have demonstrable experience with both earned and paid media, preferably at a non-profit organization. Exceptional writing and editing skills are essential, as is the ability to manage several tasks and responsibilities simultaneously. The ideal candidate will also have solid knowledge of sustainable agriculture, food systems, or environmental policy.  This is a great opportunity for those with a knowledge of and passion for the food movement who are interested in policy and grassroots advocacy.

Media Coordinator duties will include:

  • Writing: Draft and edit frequent press releases and blogs on a wide range of food, health, and environmental issues
  • Reporter relations: Field and direct media inquiries, build strong relationships with relevant reporters, and pitch stories
  • Media lists: Develop and maintain up to date media lists using Cision
  • Media coverage: Track media coverage and compile reports for communications team
  • Research and editing: Research information needed for blogs and talking points, assist program staff with revising and editing educational materials, factsheets and reports
  • Events: Assist with planning of briefings, press conferences, and speaking events


  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or similar degree preferred
  • Strong interest in sustainable agriculture, food, or environmental issues
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently in a multifaceted working atmosphere
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Organized and multi-task oriented; able to keep up with short and changing deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Public relations, advocacy or Capitol Hill experience preferred
  • Graphic design skills are not required but are appreciated
