Another Victory for Consumers: MARS to Label GE Ingredients

Major food producer says it will include clear labeling on all packaging

Mars, Incorporated has announced it will introduce clear, on-package labeling on its products that contain genetically engineered (GE, also known as GMO) ingredients. The announcement from one of the largest worldwide food and beverage producers is another major victory for the food movement, following last week’s bi-partisan defeat of the Deny Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act, a bill that if passed would have blocked mandatory GE food labeling at the state and federal levels.

Mars’ announcement follows a similar move by major food producer General Mills last week, and Campbell’s Soup in January.

The following is a statement from Andrew Kimbrell, Executive Director, Center for Food Safety:

“Americans have a right to know what is in the food products we purchase and consume. Clear labeling of genetically engineered ingredients should be the standard, not the exception, and information hidden behind QR codes won’t suffice.

“Mars has read the writing on the wall. The state of Vermont’s mandatory labeling law and last week’s defeat of the DARK Act are clear indicators that consumers want to be informed, and deserve to be able to make informed choices. This is a huge win for the food movement and for consumer rights.”
