The Center for Food Safety (CFS) is a non-profit, membership organization established to address the impacts of our food production systems on human health, the environment and animal welfare. CFS is a leading advocate working to ensure consumer and environmental protection on a variety of issues, including food safety standards, genetic engineering, irradiation, aquaculture, mad cow disease, use of production hormones and organic food standards. Position Overview: The Legislative Coordinator will work with CFS legal, policy and outreach staff in all of CFS's substantive practice areas, including a focus in the regulation of genetically engineered food. This work will include legislative and regulatory advocacy in the U.S. Congress and state legislatures, and in front of regulatory agencies. The Legislative Coordinator will report directly to the CFS Legal Director to manage, implement and coordinate all day-to-day legal and advocacy actions for the organization.
Responsibilities:

Day-to-Day Management of Policymaker Education Activities - Keep and maintain a schedule of CFS-supported legislative activities on a federal and state level. This shall include establishing and maintaining CFS's relationships with Congressional staff and other legislative and regulatory offices, and undertaking all other actions necessary to represent CFS professionally and ethically in ongoing policymaker education matters.

Actions Before Congress and Regulatory Agencies - Identify opportunities for CFS to advance its policy goals in all legislative and regulatory settings including the introduction of legislation and/or support of pending legislation. This shall include meeting with Congressional offices on an ongoing basis, attending and participating in meetings and hearings, drafting legislation, and attending other events concerning legislative actions relevant to CFS's areas of practice. Other actions include: working with CFS legal, media and outreach staff to coordinate and engage the public in support of CFS policy efforts through activities such as action alerts, public speaking, grassroots campaign development and litigation priority setting.

Organizational Interactions - Maintain and promote cordial and mutually beneficial relationships with individuals and organizations that are allied, in coalition with, or may work in concert with CFS to achieve its policy goals. This includes attending briefings, strategy meetings, conferences and speaking engagements. It also includes providing technical assistance to state and local organizations working with CFS to achieve mutually shared goals.

Support for Foundation Relations - Work with Director of Foundation Relations, Legal Director and Executive Director to provide support for organizational outreach to charitable foundations that support CFS. This may include assisting with proposal writing, grant report compilations and attending meetings and briefings with relevant funders.

Reporting and Disclosure - Work with the Office Manager and outside financial consultants (accountants, etc.) to maintain and file all necessary registration, expenditure, and lobbying disclosure data with Congress and the IRS concerning CFSs policymaker education activities. This activity also includes ongoing monitoring of such actions and expenditures to ensure that CFS maintains its 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
Qualifications Include: All candidates should possess an excellent academic background, a strong commitment to CFS's mission, and at least 3 years legislative experience. J.D. preferred but not required. Salary commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits and work environment.
