The Center for Food Safety is a national, non-profit organization that works to protect the environment and human health by curbing the use of harmful food production technologies and by promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture. The organization is a leading advocate working to ensure consumer and environmental protection on a variety of issues including genetic engineering, irradiation, aquaculture and organic food standards. CFS's sister organization, the International Center for Technology Assessment (CTA), is a non-profit organization committed to providing the public with full assessments and analyses of technological impacts on society. Position Overview: The Development Director will manage, implement, and expand CFS and CTA's fundraising activities, which includes foundation, major donor, and special event fundraising. The majority of the Development Director's time will be spent on CFS work. CFS has offices in both Washington, DC and San Francisco; this position can be in either office.
Responsibilities:
- Work with Senior Management Team to implement and expand CFS/CTA fundraising plan;
- Analyze the funding community and locate new funding sources;
- Edit existing and create new proposals, letters of inquiry, supporting materials and budgets;
- Write development plans, strategies, and new proposals
- Conduct outreach to existing and new funding sources;
- Contribute to the development and oversight of organizational and program budgets; and
- Serve as staff liaison to Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
- 5 to 10 years previous experience with foundation grant fundraising for environmental or grassroots organizations;
- Proven success in raising funds from foundations and major donors;
- Knowledge of philanthropic community, foundations and institutional resources;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including strong proposal writing experience;
- Detail-oriented and ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Creative problem solver and self-starter;
- Experience and aptitude with MS Office and database systems; and
- Interest, passion and commitment to food safety and consumer and environmental activism.
